Back to school: How to access free school textbooks?

Free school manuals? Learn how to request and pick them up.

Currently, it is possible to access school manuals for free for school years 1 to 12, mandatory education, in both public and private schools.  

However, educational institutions must have association contracts (association contracts are funding protocols entered into between the State and private or cooperative schools).

To get the school textbooks, you need to make a request for vouchers that must be done by the guardian.  

So, to request the vouchers, according to the Government website, you need:  

• To be registered as a guardian in each student's school;  

• To have the Tax Identification Number (NIF) associated on the MEGA platform; 

• Use the access data for the Finance Portal when entering the MEGA platform for the first time.

In case you have free school manuals through vouchers from the previous year, it is necessary to return them to the school, in good condition, so you can request new vouchers for the school manuals of this academic year. It is only not necessary to return the manuals if they are from the 1st cycle.

To request vouchers for free textbooks you must:  

1. Register on the MEGA platform or on the mobile app Edu Rede Escolar (download the app for Android devices; download the app for Apple devices) - registration to receive the vouchers is automatic after registration;

1. Consult or download the vouchers on the platform or mobile application.

Next, the platform/application will indicate whether you will receive vouchers for new or used books, with vouchers only being issued in the case of new books being assigned.

If used books are assigned, they can be collected at the school itself, and the vouchers for new books must be exchanged at the participating bookstores. Each voucher includes a unique code with the corresponding manual.

When the vouchers are available, the guardian will receive a notification by email.  

In 2024, the deadlines for the provision of school textbooks for students are as follows:  

• From August 1st, start 1st cycle and 9th grade at.

• From 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades as of August 8; 

• Attend 10th, 11th and 12th grades and other training programs starting from August 13th.
