In the summer, the long days invite spending more time outside, and no ticket is needed to access some of the best landscapes in Portugal.
One of the most popular and free options is the exploration of pedestrian paths and walkways spread throughout the country. The Paiva Walkways (with very low costs), the Vicentina Route or the trails of Arrábida Mountain and Peneda-Gerês offer hours of exercise and direct contact with nature.
In addition, the dozens of river beaches spread throughout the Central and Northern regions of the country are mostly completely free to access, providing a quieter (and toll-free) alternative to the beaches of the southern coast.
If you prefer a more urban program, cities have a lot to offer for free. In Portugal, most museums and national monuments supervised by the State offer free entry on Sundays and holidays (at specific times, usually in the morning) for all residents in the national territory. It is the perfect opportunity to visit iconic places like the Jerónimos Monastery, the Coach Museum, or the Machado de Castro National Museum without spending a single euro.
In addition, in the summer the municipal councils often organize outdoor concerts, cinema in the square, and craft fairs with completely free entry. Paying attention to the cultural agenda of your municipality can ensure many fulfilling evenings.
Instead of booking dinners or lunches at restaurants inflated by summer tourism, opt for meetings in urban parks. Prepare a packed lunch at home and have a picnic in gardens like the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation or Eduardo VII Park (in Lisbon), or in the City Park or Crystal Palace Gardens (in Porto) is an excellent program for family or friends.
In addition to saving money on the meal, the relaxed atmosphere invites you to bring a ball, a deck of cards, or simply a towel and a book to spend the afternoon.
Summer calls for imagination instead of credit cards. The key to not spending money is to always leave home prepared: bring reusable water bottles, snacks to resist temptation at cafes, and prioritize shared means of transportation.
